Abstract:

Doing the body count with Steven Pinker

In early January a video emerged showing four US marine troops urinating on dead Taliban fighters. The footage provoked outrage on the part of political elites, drawing condemnation from the US Secretary of State and Defense Secretary as well as political leaders across the western world. The act, according to General Amos, the Marine Corps commandant, was ‘inconsistent with the high standards of conduct and warrior ethos that [the US] has demonstrated throughout its history’. Some commentators even called for the marines to be prosecuted for war crimes.
