Abstract:
Conservatism in Australia. Can the policies of the Howard government be described as ‘postmodern’?
In January of this year, a minor flap occurred in the days leading up to the inauguration of US President-elect Barack Obama, when it became clear that Blair House – the White House’s main guest accommodation, and traditionally the place where the President-elect stays before the inauguration – would not be available. In a final fit of pique (or incompetence) George W. Bush had ensured that the accommodation was already booked, forcing the Obamas into a hotel. Yet who had taken the booking? Gordon Brown and other European leaders had declined the place – who could have taken it? Step forward John Howard.
