Abstract:

Experienced activists and organisers know that the only thing worse than a shortage of committed volunteers to man the barricades is an oversupply of artists willing to do duty. Thus it was that one looked at the list of public submissions to the Productivity Commission’s inquiry into the importation of books with a heavy heart. Page after page the names scrolled. Had every published author sought to give the commission the benefit of their wisdom on the matter? Of course they had a perfect right to, but would they not have been better employed working collectively to create a smaller number of better researched submissions?
