Abstract:

It’s a brave CEO that talks down the market, so it’s not surprising to find Glyn Davis enthusing over the current state of universities in the 2010 Boyer Lectures. Universities have become a global phenomenon and the possibilities for ‘knowledge transfer’ have radically increased in the digital age. Whereas others see a crisis in the university, it’s all good for Davis in a world where globalisation, technology and markets create more knowledge than ever before. At a superficial level it’s easy to get away with this. After all, who is against knowledge? And doesn’t the expansion of the tertiary sector mean an end to the old ‘elitism’ and more knowledge for all?
