The tendency of cultural managers to manage the identity of New Zealanders in order to present a desirable image for Aotearoa/New Zealand globally is criticized. It is suggested that the policy of 'inclusive exclusion' should acknowledge the non-national differences among people within the nation-state to project a truly democratic, welcoming nation.
