Abstract:
The growth of new technologies, free information from global databanks, obsolete business models, a loss of core purpose – all these have been used to explain the parlous state of print media. But could they apply equally to universities? In the midst of job loss announcements in the media and manufacturing sectors the news of cuts in universities has gone largely unnoticed. But the last couple of years have seen consistent shedding of staff within Australian institutions. Many argue that current levels of government support cannot sustain a mass higher education system and the push for various forms of market-based deregulation continues. From another quarter comes the suggestion that we may not need universities at all.
