Abstract:

The forced disappearance of forty-three Mexican students.

A year has passed since the outrageous attack, forced disappearance, and alleged murder of forty-three Mexican students in the small town of Ayotzinapa in southern Mexico. So far their families have not received a credible response from the Mexican authorities about what happened, and President Enrique Pena Nieto has been unresponsive towards the investigation and the feelings of the families. Recently, an interdisciplinary group of independent experts carefully analysed the evidence provided by the attorney-general and concluded that the bodies of the students were not burnt in a dump as the government stated, with significant implications for what should happen next. Thanks to coordinated pressure from local and international human rights organisations, the Mexican government has not been able sweep the case under the carpet. Still today, in numerous demonstrations and protests in Mexico and abroad, activists are demanding justice, because without a reliable and exhaustive investigation prosecutions will be impossible.
