Abstract:
A few years ago, before he died, I wrote up my father’s anecdotes. Dad made reference to the Dutch ‘Joodse Raad’; I quizzed my dad and looked it up. I wrote the following footnote: DEC ’08 – Much can be found on the internet on ‘De Joodse Raad’ (The Jewish Council). The Nazis lulled many Jews into a false sense of security and got them to register with the Joodse Raad. Ultimately they used the records of the Joodse Raad in their efforts to ‘clean’ (reinigen) Holland of its Jewish population. Is this where that abhorrent term ‘ethnic cleansing’ originated?
