Abstract:

A high school student sits in a packed marquee listening to embattled NSW Premier Nathan Rees address the crowd. ‘The green agenda is coming at politicians like a train down the tunnel’, says Rees. ‘Green values’, ‘Obama’s green jobs plan’, ‘large-scale solar’, he continues. ‘What about the world’s largest coal port?’ inquires a heckler. ‘I’ll get to coal in a minute’, replies Rees. He doesn’t. The high school student steals a glance at the object beneath her chair. ‘It’s your cause, your future, all power to you’, and Rees is done. She reaches down and grabs the object, donning the bright green plastic hardhat as she stands up and chants ‘No new coal! Renewable Energy Now!’ The chant fills the marquee as the Premier scurries from the stage. Power Shift has officially begun.
