The day I knew I would leave the recruitment centre was the day Lauren started. It was in late summer; I arrived blooming with sweat from the ride in. In the toilets I plucked my shirt off my damp skin, pulled down the cinched skirt that made me mince. I had time for a coffee, I thought, a small moment of transition. But Jacqualynne, the Client Relations Manager, was in the kitchen area already. Her voice filled up the room. With her was a young woman I hadn’t met before.
