Abstract:

Malta’s geo-political position in the central Mediterranean and at the edge of the European Union has, since the turn of the twenty-first century, put the island in the path of migration flows from Africa into Southern Europe. Since its accession into the European Union in 2004, Malta has had somewhat contradictory responsibilities, as a small state on the southern periphery, to both shore up its borders against irregular immigration flows and also to provide asylum to those in need.
