Abstract:

If you think society is a jungle it follows that ruthlessness is a necessity: if life is understood as a dog-eat-dog competition, being smarter and tougher has to be the criteria for success. Mindful that there are limits to discursive determinism, we can nevertheless say that personhood and social relations, roles and responsibilities are significantly defined – are cast in a specific sociohistorical form – with respect to the understanding of society that prevails in a given location at a given time.
