Abstract:

Over the last decade, several studies have revealed the sad state of music education in Australia’s schools. The 2005 ‘National Review of School Music Education’ has clearly outlined the lack of a consistent, nation-wide music curriculum; the lack of teacher training in music; and the massive disparity between public and private schools in terms of music training and resources. As the Music Council of Australia has consistently argued since, these (and other problems in relation to arts education) have to be addressed if the Rudd ‘Education Revolution’ is to mean something more than funding computer hardware.
