Abstract:

Malcolm Turnbull’s positivity hides the prospect of the 80/20 society.

One of the first victories of the Turnbull government has been to turn around the toxic feel associated with the budget deficits and tax reform of Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey. The failure of Abbott to bludgeon a way through to a workable budget reality-announcing that the easy life had come to an end, while demanding that the less well off carry the burden-is interesting. Opposing unfairness is certainly a positive narrative in Abbott’s demise. But can we rule out another view: that telling the public the good times had ended, that normality had no prospect, was enough to bring him down?
