Abstract:

The drubbing taken by the Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP) in the general election of 1992 set back the cause of Scottish independence many years. Unquestionably, the elections were a disaster for the SNP. Pre-election polls had indicated that up to fifty per cent of Scots were in favour of some form of independence, prompting a sense of panic. Fear of political extinction served to concentrate minds in Conservative circles, while Scottish Labour held serious doubts about future cohabitation with an anti-union SNP.
