Abstract:
Hunger rather than sex, argued Ernst Bloch, is the fundamental human drive. Dealing with hunger is our continuous activity. A lack of food channels our desires, in a way that a repressed libido never could. Hunger is a dread, but it is also a dream. The anticipated meal, the ripening fruit, the rising loaf, are all made of hope and point toward the future. Real hunger (always returning) and the dream of plenty (always changing its face) go together. A few potatoes and the Promised Land.
