Abstract:

Racism played out in the Australian media in subtle but familiar ways

Eddie McGuire’s recent racist ‘slip’ on radio dominated the media for days. There was extensive commentary across digital and print media about the politics and ethics of this situation, much of which pointed to the historical dimensions of the ‘ape’ insult, acknowledgement of the ingrained nature of racism and discussion of the problem of racism in sport.
