Abstract:
A few weeks ago, the state of Victoria joined a handful of visionary governments around the world who have legislated a permanent ban on the exploration and development of all onshore ‘unconventional gas’ (coal-seam gas (CSG), shale gas and tight gas). In addition, Victoria’s moratorium on onshore ‘conventional’ drilling has been extended until 2020. Our new responsible environmental-protection laws are the direct result of many years of highly collaborative and strategic rural community efforts. People from all walks of life put aside their differences in order to focus on what ordinary people have in common: the overwhelming desire to protect our farmlands, water supplies and precious nature reserves (and, for many, the habitable global climate we all depend on) from a short-sighted, aggressive and predatory fossil-fuel industry.
