Abstract:
It is now four years since the GFC descended upon us, confronting developmental and growth assumptions Left, Right and Centre. If one thing is clear, it is that there is still no recovery in sight. This can be seen in a variety of ways. Even the Australian economy, significantly protected from the worst of the crisis by the resources boom and Asian – especially Chinese – growth, is now losing its way, experiencing an emptying out of public confidence and certainty about the economic future. This is even before recent signs that China may no longer prop up the resources boom. But it is in Europe and the United States that the evidence is convincing that something utterly intransigent is at work.
