Abstract:

I am standing waiting in a queue in a primary site of postmodernity, the Coburg City Library. I am waiting for access to one of the eight computer terminals which will tell me where I can find some books on ‘Greek Gods and Heroes’ for my son’s school project. Two of the terminals are down’. The rest are being used. After ten minutes waiting I gratefully sink into a chair in front of one of the terminals, press the keys for a ‘Subject’ search and key in ‘Greek mythology’. Nothing! I try Greek religion? Nothing! ‘Greek Gods’? Nothing! Greek heroes? Nothing!! In panicky desperation I push another set of keys for ‘Author’ and punch in (literally) ‘Bullfinch’, then Graves’. Nope, never heard of them either, it seems.
