Abstract:

When I decided to return to art as my creative outlet, I felt I needed to educate myself about the industry and get a sense of what it meant to be an artist in Australia. I had never had an exhibition before. I set off on a two-week trip down the east coast of Australia, visiting as many major art institutions and contemporary art spaces as I could get to. Early in the trip I came across Vernon Ah Kee’s work and his large charcoal drawings referencing Norman Tindale’s ethnographic collections. They really stimulated my thinking and they inspired me from a technical point of view too. I was enormously energised by my trip, and on returning to Adelaide enrolled in a drawing workshop with renowned portrait artist David Jon Kassan. After completing the workshop I decided that a project focusing on family was a good starting point for my practice.
