Abstract:
Local democracy and its consequences for LNP candidates everywhere.
The election of Cathy McGowan as the independent member for Indi in the recent federal election has provoked the attention of every punter with a passing interest in the electoral politics of this country. In a context where independent candidates in rural electorates a la Oakeshott and Windsor were totally on the nose and the rest of the country was savouring the opportunity of giving Labor a decent hiding, the achievement of McGowan in dethroning future Liberal front bencher Sophie Mirabella can’t be exaggerated.
