Abstract:

Just prior to the 2010 federal election all three main Australian political parties were agreed on the need to stop illegal logging. Even the bureaucracy had recognised the inevitability of the need to act. The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) had undertaken preparatory work since 2008. The announcement by the Labor party seeking to ‘implement a package of reforms to restrict the sale of illegally logged wood in Australia’ surprised no one.
