Abstract:

Each new episode of violence against westerners committed in the name of Islam-the beheading of Western journalists in Syria, the killing of a Canadian soldier, the deaths of Australian hostages in Sydney and, most recently (at the time of writing) the murders at Charlie Hebdo followed by more hostage deaths in Paris-leads to renewed calls for ‘ordinary’ Muslims to denounce the perpetrators and, particularly for those who live in Europe, North America and Australia, to declare their commitment to the values of free speech, peaceful protest, democracy and gender equality that supposedly reign supreme in the West.
