Abstract:

As the geopolitical mining-energy axis shifts away from coal to renewables, Australia has been heralded as a potential ‘renewable energy superpower’, based on its abundance of solar-radiation intensity and materials like lithium that are central to new energy technology. In the global shift to renewable-energy technologies, Australia has the potential to play an equally, if not more influential role in global renewable-energy systems reliant on lithium, graphite and cobalt. The export of commodities essential for new renewable-energy technologies could include mined materials, solar-generated electricity and concentrated solar fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia and synthetic diesel.
