Second degree tampering’, so the hack cover tells us, is US legalese for infecting computer systems with viruses which can become active ‘weeks, months, even years later … often with unpredictable effect’. Whether you think this is a criminal or guerilla activity will depend on your relation to the system – presumably the editors want similar havoc in the file marked ‘Australian Literature’, just when that august institution maybe congratulating itself on having survived the women novelists of the 1980s.
