Abstract:
Europe’s Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) has proved a giant disservice to the European project. If the dream was to foster integration in a currency union and move towards a truly integrated Europe, a United States of Europe even, the institutional set-up of the EMU and the current crisis management seem to bring about the exact opposite. Never in the history of the EU has there been more distrust and objection among its member states and citizens. The ‘core values of the EU’, officially defined as ‘human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights’ are buried under an increasingly petty-minded discourse that revolves solely around bank bailouts, interest rates and whether or not the ECB should purchase government bonds to push down the cost of public borrowing.
