Abstract:

On the evening of Wednesday 18 July, Readings Bookshop hosted a public debate on the situation in Syria. The event took place in a plush lecture theatre beside the new Readings outlet in the recently opened ‘Brain Centre’ at the University of Melbourne. Having expected the evening to resemble similar events at Readings’ Lygon Street store – where book launch audiences squeeze among the aisles, straining to see and hear distant speakers at the rear of the shop – I was surprised by the salubriousness and spaciousness of the setting for this Syria debate. It was a rather incongruous backdrop for the gruesomely-titled soiree: ‘The Horror of Syria’.
