Abstract:

When Graham Richardson retired, his so-called ‘reforms’ to private health insurance seemed to hit the ground. Many who support Medicare and the primary role of the public sector in health care saw this as a significant victory. Yet media speculation on a possible increase in the Medicare levy, and in hospital waiting lists, has recently reopened the debate on the relative emphases to be allocated to the private and public sectors in health-care financing. This debate has major implications for the continued viability of Medicare.
