Finally, the digital version of Pandora’s Box has been opened. By fleeing the ‘land of dreams’, as it is praised in a recent tourism campaign, and disclosing US and UK intelligence agencies’ global observation practices, Edward Snowden has changed the discussion around surveillance and the state of democracy more generally. It is telling that of all people a computer expert, not more than thirty years old, has confirmed the existence of that Pandora’s box and enabled us to have a look inside.
