Abstract:

Four years ago the traditional landowners of Panguna in Central Bougainville pulled the plug on the CRA copper mine which had torn at the mineral-rich heart of their island for three decades. In response to the forced closure of the lucrative mine, and the growing cries for Bougainvillean self-determination, Papua New Guinea sent in the troops. And Australia sent aid – to the PNG Defence Force (PNGDF) in the form of helicopters, spotter planes, patrol boats, speed boats, mortar bombs, ammunition, and training and funds to prop up the fight. For four years Australia has equipped the military blockade which isolates the island, preventing essential medical supplies from getting through to the Bougainvillean people.
