Abstract:

Most Australians are familiar with the figure of the Jacky. He is found in suburban garden kitsch, a three-foot black plaster miniature with a red lap-lap and spear, or perhaps inside the house as a cutesie receptacle for cigarette butts: the tea-towel image of Aboriginality. It is the Jacky who features in blokey bar discourse – as the butt of racist jokes. Thir derogatory representation of Aboriginality is a pitiful figure of the bewildered ‘traditional’ Aborigine who has wandered into modernity, yet at the same time also maintains notions of a pristine and authentic Aboriginality.
