Abstract:

The experiences of German-speaking intellectuals Erich Frey, Erwin Borchers and Rudy Schroder as European deserters in the Vietnamese Independence League (the Viet Minh) forces in Indochina are discussed. The change from their earlier positions of respect and power, their eventual isolation and their return to their homeland are documented.
