Abstract:

Frank is the last remaining butcher in the local shopping strip. Typical of established suburbs in Australian capital cities his middle-sized village is a clutch of cheek-by-jowl shops on both sides of a relatively narrow arterial road. Like the adjacent shops his unrenovated store is modest in scale. That said, his neighbours have had radical face-lifts or, less ambitiously, cosmetic makeovers over the years, which makes walking into Frank’s abode something like stepping onto a movie set. Older customers feel settled and at ease here whilst younger or more up-market visitors probably feel depressed or even cheapened.
