Abstract:

Budga Budga (Halls Gap) is located in country belonging to the totemic Bram brothers. The exploits of these brothers linked together much of the land surrounding Garlwerd (the Grampians) in one narrative sequence. In recognition of the Koorl heritage of this place, the past Victorian Labor Government gave approval to formally rename this country under the dual name of Grampians/Gariwerd. The newly elected Kennett administration duly changed the name back in recognition of its white colonial heritage. Despite this, Gariwerd retains its sacred significance for the Koories of western Victoria.
