Abstract:
The Chinese authorities have revised the estimate of the number of people to be displaced by the damming of the Yangzi River. Latest figures put the number to be resettled at 1.3 million. The World Bank is helping to finance the construction of the world’s biggest hydro-electric dam, to be constructed near Yichang in Central China. The dam will flood the valleys of the Yangzi and its tributaries for six hundred kilometres upstream, including the filling of two hundred kilometres of spectacular gorges, which currently provide precious farm land, transport and tourist attractions.
