Abstract:

It is nearly ten years since the last big UN women’s conference, the World Conference of Women in Nairobi in 1985 (see Arena 73, 1985). At that conference a policy document entitled Forward Looking Strategies was agreed to by governments. Next year the United Nations has decided to convene a further mega-conference in Beijing in September – in reality two conferences, one for governments and one for non-government organizations (NGOs) – to assess how much progress has been made towards achieving the document’s objectives.
