I return a stranger to a place once my entire world. The taxi cruises the top end, the well drained en where plane trees cast shadows at precise intervals, footpaths are asphalted, gutters concreted, gardens of brick bungalows subdued without mercy, their paths hard and narrow and straight. I’m from the low end of town, where drains drain to, where it’s fibro and weatherboard and footpaths of gravel, where the creek ran red on slaughtering days. The top end was never my part of town and the low stopped being home after I left for university. No wonder it’s so foreign now. Not that trope about things seeming smaller. It’s more like I’ve returned to a movie set that’s outlasted the poor players who strutted here.
