Abstract:

The observation that republicanism is a man’s movement, led by men, speaking to masculine yearnings and fantasies, has now become commonplace. Opinion polls confirm that men are more enthusiastic about the prospect of Australia becoming a republic than women. A recent Bulletin poll reported that women are indeed reluctant republicans, trailing men in their support by a significant thirteen points. Political movements are sustained by emotional as well as imaginative engagements and on the issue of republicanism women seem to be smitten by a collective lack of desire.
