A symposium on 50 years of Arena's contribution to Australian cultural and political life
A symposium on 50 years of Arena’s contribution to Australian cultural and political life
Sponsored by the Australian Centre at the University of Melbourne and Arena Publications.
Dear readers, contributors and supporters,
The year 2013 marks Arena’s 50th birthday. We hope you will join us on 15 November this year to celebrate our anniversary in a symposium on Arena’s contribution to Australian cultural and political life.
With specially invited participants and speakers, the symposium will reflect on Arena’s history and the Australian (and world) context that has shaped its work. Each decade since the first Arena was published has had a distinct flavour, with the core issues of the time preoccupying arena editors and writers. ‘From Cold War to Hot Planet’ reflects the shifting times: from the Cold War and emerging New Left of the 60s to the social movements and Whitlamism of the 70s, the transformation of the university and ferment around theory and postmodernism in the 80s, to globalisation and neoliberalism in the 90s and the New World Order and environmental crisis today.
The Australian Centre and Arena are also working on an electronic anthology of articles that illustrate the diversity and importance of the Arena archive, and Arena Publications is planning a special edition of Arena Journal in 2014 examining Arena’s editorial outlook and development.
